Umbilical hernias present as a bulge at the navel that pops out when the baby cries or strains. Over 90% close spontaneously by age 3 to 4 as the rectus abdominis muscles fuse together. Surgery is only required if the defect persists after age 4 to 5.

Inguinal Hernia: Why Early Surgery is Mandatory

Inguinal hernias occur when the processus vaginalis fails to close, allowing a loop of bowel (or ovary in girls) to slip into the groin. Inguinal hernias NEVER close on their own and carry a dangerous 15% risk of strangulation. Prompt day-care herniotomy is recommended.
