Colic is defined by the 'Rule of 3s': crying for more than 3 hours a day, at least 3 days a week, for at least 3 consecutive weeks in an otherwise healthy infant. While distressing, colic is not a disease and typically resolves spontaneously by 3 to 4 months of age.
Dr. Harvey Karp's 5 S's Technique
- Swaddle: Wrap your baby snuggly with hands down to reduce startling.
- Side/Stomach Position: Hold baby on their side or belly across your forearm while awake and supervised.
- Shush: Make a loud white-noise 'shhh' sound close to their ear to replicate placental blood flow sounds.
- Swing: Gentle, rhythmic jiggling motions with firm head support.
- Suck: Offer a clean pacifier or finger to trigger natural calming reflexes.
Evaluating for Cow's Milk Protein Allergy (CMPA)
If colic is accompanied by vomiting, eczema rashes, or blood specks in stool, a pediatric evaluation for cow's milk protein allergy or maternal dietary exclusion is warranted.
Doctor's Clinical Insight: "Remember: colic is not your fault, and it is not a reflection of your parenting. Take turns resting with your partner when evenings feel overwhelming." — Dr. D Bhanu Prakash, MD, DM
